Position Title: Pottery Studio Technician

Location: Grand Mesa Arts and Events Center - Art Garage

Reports to: GMAEC Executive Director

Job Type: Part Time  (15-20 hours per week)

 

Summary:

The Pottery Studio Technician keeps the day-to-day operations of the pottery studio moving smoothly; this includes cleaning and preparing the studio before opening hours, managing materials and supplies for the classes, maintaining the potter's wheels and kilns and other equipment, as well as firing ceramics for customers. Works closely with class instructors.  May also teach courses on specific subjects or techniques and assist students with their projects. The Pottery Studio Technician will work with volunteers to train and manage duties assigned to volunteers and instructors.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pottery Studio Management

  • Ordering, storing, and mixing clay for classes.

  • Making and screening glazes for classes and pottery painting open studio.

  • Maintaining, loading/unloading the kilns, and grinding shelves or applying kiln washes to shelves.

  • Maintaining the clay sink, traps, and hand tools.

  • Working with the Art Garage Manager to order supplies and equipment.

  • Classes and Volunteers

  • Support instructors by providing materials needed and maintaining equipment.

  • Assist instructors, students, and customers with projects and materials.

  • Train and supervise volunteers to assist with equipment and cleaning.

  • Work with the Art Garage manager to program appropriate classes, order materials and tools.

Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years previous experience maintaining pottery studio preferred. Background in pottery, including experience maintaining kilns and clay.

  • Lifting and organizing raw materials (typical weight is 50 lbs.).

  • Solid experience with pottery in both hand building and wheel throwing.

  • Knowledge of pottery equipment and processes, including clay bodies and glaze preparation, kiln firing, and pugmill operation and maintenance.

Compensation:

  • This is a part time paid position 15-20 hours per week, with days and times flexible, based on schedule of studio programming.

  • $1,280  monthly (approx. $16 per hour)

  • Use of studio equipment and kiln firing for personal projects of reasonable volume may be negotiated upon hire.
